THE CHOOSE LOVE GARDEN

For the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023

The Choose Love Garden has been created by award-winning designer Jane Porter for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023, in collaboration with her charity partner Choose Love. Choose Love support refugees and displaced people all over the world with everything from education for children to life-saving medical care. Chelsea is a huge event in the horticultural world, often referred to as the ‘Glastonbury’ of gardening. We’re so grateful to an incredible organisation called Project Giving Back who are funding the garden to enable us to make the most of this high profile event. As well as funding the creation of many gardens, this also means they all live on after Chelsea, in our case finding a new home in Croydon at Good Food Matters.

About the garden

‘For many, the act of growing plants offers comfort and a sense of home.’

The Choose Love Garden is inspired by refugee migration routes across Europe, the concept of desire lines (informal paths) and the resilience of displaced people.

Linear drifts of drought tolerant species represent how plants move with people. Perennials, annuals and biennials indicate what people plant when they don’t know how long they will stay somewhere.  For many, the act of growing plants offers comfort and a sense of home.

Meet the Designer: Jane Porter

“I’m a garden and planting designer.  I’m relatively new to it having started training in 2016 and graduating from the London College of Garden Design in 2021 with distinction and ‘Prize for Best Project.’

At RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, I was delighted to win a gold medal and an award forBest in Category’ for my Still Garden. I absolutely love plants. I love using them to transform spaces and encourage people outside.  I’m also fascinated by what people choose to grow and this has been a significant part of my research for The Choose Love Garden. Working with displaced people and those who support them has been inspiring. I hope you enjoy it. “

After Chelsea – a permanent home for the garden

After RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the garden will be relocated to Good Food Matters, a remarkable community kitchen and garden in Croydon.  Their mission is to enable everyone to cook and grow nutritious, balanced meals – making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community. The Choose Love Garden will provide a reflective and beautiful space for all those who come to Good Food Matters to share meals, build confidence and develop new skills.

Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadan Mubarak

Today marks the start of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, one of the five pillars of Islam and one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. Typically, the start of the month is welcomed with greetings such as ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ (have a blessed Ramadan) or ‘Ramadan Kareem’ (have a generous Ramadan) This month is significantly known as the month where the Quran was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as guidance to mankind. Ramadan always arrives when our souls need the most spiritual sustenance and in the midst of all the uncertainty we face in the world, there is no better time to connect with God and increase our good deeds and blessings.

Ramadan for me is a time of reflection, letting go of bad habits, detaching from the worldly pleasures and connecting more with my faith. It isn’t about emptying our stomach but feeding our soul. I will spend the blessed days observing the five daily prayers, recitation of the Quran, giving to charity, spiritual and self reflection. This is an opportunity to cultivate habits that we can carry throughout the year and strive to be the very best version of ourselves. There is such comfort in knowing that over a billion people observe the month with me, the serenity of standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer, being charitable with the community and sharing the joy of iftar with family and friends. One of the most beautiful lessons from the month is that fasting gives us a small window to empathise more deeply with those less fortunate across the world. It allows us to reflect on what we take for granted and makes us appreciate the countless blessings we have.

Despite the hardship of fasting for a whole month, most Muslims myself included, actually look forward to Ramadan and are a little sad when it’s over. There’s something really special about knowing that billions of fellow Muslims around the world are experiencing the same and that we’re all in it together. While I have my occasional slip ups of feeling tired, getting headaches and being unproductive – every year I really look forward to taking on the challenge.

Through the experience of hunger and thirst, the spirit of Ramadan inspires Muslims to be charitable.

But for lots of practising Muslim people around the world, who are displaced or seeking asylum, breaking the fast with Iftar can be extra challenging. For those living in temporary accommodations where there are little to no cooking facilities, preparing, finding and being able to afford suitable foods to break Iftar can be impossible.

At Choose Love, many of our partners support Muslim families throughout Ramadan, by providing food parcels.

This year we will be supporting the Hopetowns project as they distribute 250 Ramadan parcels to people seeking sanctuary in hotel accommodations in London.

Hopetowns is a community group, led by people who have themselves been through the process of claiming asylum in the UK. Together, they support asylum seekers and refugees to integrate into the community, provide a friendly and practical support system and look out for each other’s well-being.

In Greece, our partner Lighthouse Relief is preparing to distribute parcels to 200 families during Ramadan, aiming to reach around 1000 people, including 450 children. Lighthouse Relief does incredible work to  provide food packages to vulnerable families living in insecure housing in Athens. Without Lighthouse Relief’s support, these families would otherwise not be able to access any official food services. Their work is a real lifeline.

This Ramadan, all purchases to our Hot Food Item on the Choose Love Shop will go towards supporting those celebrating, and helping our partners to distribute Iftar food parcels.

These food parcels will include suitable foods like dates, chickpeas, tea, milk powder and more to ensure those receiving can have a peaceful Iftar, no matter the circumstances.

You can help a fasting person to have Iftar by purchasing the Hot Food item from our Choose Love shop today.

Thank you so much.

A dark moment for human rights: the High Court allows the Rwanda Policy to go ahead

A dark moment for human rights: the High Court allows the Rwanda Policy to go ahead

A dark moment for human rights: the High Court allows the Rwanda Policy to go ahead

On Monday 19 December 2022, the High Court ruled that the UK Government’s Rwanda deportation scheme is lawful, which means that the policy can go ahead.

Under this scheme, asylum seekers arriving in the UK can be forcibly deported to Rwanda, where they must undertake their asylum application and will be expected to live, should their application be approved.

This cruel policy has been condemned by UNHCR and the European Court of Human Rights, who grounded what would have been the first flight deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda, advocating for the rights of the asylum seekers on board.

Going forward with this hostile policy to deport displaced people to Rwanda will tear apart families and prolong persecution for those who came to the UK seeking refuge. It signifies a very dark moment for upholding rights in the UK.

Everyone has the right to seek asylum and offshoring our moral responsibility to Rwanda is not the answer to our broken asylum system.

While the ruling sets a worrying precedent, the High Court did find that the Home Secretary acted unlawfully in her treatment of all eight individuals targeted so far by the Rwanda policy, and stated that their removal must now be reconsidered.

We hope this will mean that going forward, individual circumstances must be taken into account and that it may be harder for the UK Government to deport people under the scheme.

We will keep working together, and supporting amazing partners like Asylum Aid, who were one of the organisations that brought forward the High Court Challenge, in standing up for people’s humanity and dignity, no matter where they come from.

Choose Love x Jane Porter present… the Choose Love Garden!

Choose Love x Jane Porter present… the Choose Love Garden!

Choose Love x Jane Porter present… the Choose Love Garden!

We are thrilled to announce our new collaboration with the incredible Jane Porter, who is using her award-winning horticulture skills to create the very first Choose Love Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower in May 2023!

This will be a garden like no other. Lovingly designed by Jane Porter (Gold-Medal Winner at the Chelsea Flower Show 2022) and funded by Project Giving Back, the Choose Love Garden is inspired by refugee migration routes across Europe and the concept of desire lines – paths we create when no formal routes exist.

Jane Porter’s design speaks to the relationship between travel and home. It includes a wind-activated kinetic sculpture, which conveys the uncertainty of the lives of displaced people, and a dry-stream bed path representing waterway migrations.

This incredible garden will be full of blossoming colourful flowers, as well as herbs originating from the Middle East, Afghanistan, and the Mediterranean, some of which will have been grown by refugee gardeners living in the UK!

When the RHS Chelsea Flower Show ends, The Choose Love Garden will be relocated to Good Food Matters, a community food learning centre, with a communal garden and kitchen based in Croydon. Here, the Choose Love Garden will continue to inspire connection as a space to meet, talk and forge friendships.

With its thoughtful design, the Choose Love Garden represents a new way of starting conversations about an incredibly important topic in the world today. What better way to spread the Choose Love message while showcasing the beauty of the world around us?

We can’t wait to see the Choose Love Garden in full bloom at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show next summer!
